Witnesses to the experience of God: identity and mission
Welcome home
...Avila, land of Teresa and John of the Cross, opens its doors to the great family of the Secular Discalced Carmel. From the five continents, more than a thousand brothers and sisters will gather to celebrate what we are: a vocation, a charism, a shared mission.
For four days, we will live together a journey of prayer, formation, fraternity and sending. With our hearts in God and our feet in the world, we will come together to renew our identity, discern together the current challenges and strengthen our universal communion.

In Avila
Avila, the site of our congress and the birthplace of our mother Saint Teresa of Jesus, is a medium-sized city located in the heart of Castilla y León, known for its rich history, serene atmosphere and excellent heritage preservation. With a population of around 60,000 inhabitants, it offers the tranquility of a small city without renouncing a vibrant cultural life. It stands out for its imposing medieval wall, one of the best preserved in Europe, which surrounds its historic center and gives it a unique character.
Avila offers a wide variety of options: spirituality centers, and a varied offer of tourist accommodations (traditional hotels and hostels and tourist apartments).

Tourist Accommodations
Those of you who prefer tourist accommodations can consult the link to the official tourism website of Ávila (www.avilaturismo.com), where you can consult the complete offer, or on the usual international platforms (Booking.com, Airbnb, Expedia, among others), which allow you to pay in your local currency and with the conditions of each country.
Spirituality Centers
We encourage you to consider the Spirituality Centers as a particularly recommendable alternative due to their proximity to the Palacio de Congresos. At present, the cost for half board is between 50€ - 90€ for a double room. These centers have reserved a limited number of rooms for congress attendees, available up to three months before the date of the event. At these venues, payment is usually made in euros by bank transfer.. We encourage you to book as soon as possible, as some of them - such as the Diocesan House and the Major Seminary - will only accept reservations until the end of January 2026.
Below, we detail the spirituality centers that are more difficult to find on these platforms or in tourist listings.

Avila
Castilian city that welcomes us in this International Meeting of the OCDS, is important to us as the birthplace of Our Mother St. Teresa of Jesus, on March 28, 1515, and as the place where the founding work of the Discalced Carmel began by the Saint, on August 24, 1562.
We recommend a visit to the Monastery of the Incarnation, where St. Teresa entered as a nun in 1535, and where the mystical phenomenon of the transverberation of her heart took place.
The cathedral of the city where Teresa, as a teenager, entrusted herself to the Blessed Virgin in her recent orphanhood; the church of the Saint, built on the Natal House of St. Teresa, of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers and the monastery of San José, first foundation of the Discalced Carmel in 1562.
A stroll through the city, along its perfectly preserved walls, is also recommended. The "Instagram" photo It is recommended to do it from the outskirts of the old town, from the place known as the "Cuatro Postes" (Four Posts).
Alba de Tormes
Small town of Salamanca for its size, but great for guarding the mortal remains of our Mother.
St. Teresa of Jesus, in the church of Our Lady of the Annunciation, of the Discalced Carmelite nuns.
From there he ascended to heaven on October 4, 1582, a date that, with the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, became October 15, the date on which we celebrate his Solemnity.
Interesting CARMUS Museum, from which you can access to the chapel of the tomb of the Saint, which is accompanied by two beautiful reliquaries, one containing the heart and the other the left arm of the Saint, both incorrupt as the rest of the mortal remains.
Segovia
Beautiful Castilian city that preserves the magnificent Roman Aqueduct that, together with the historic center, was
declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.
The Aqueductaqueduct, the cathedralthe historical centerthe Alcazar where Walt Disney was inspired to draw his Snow White castle, already make the city worthy of a visit.
For us Discalced Carmelites, it has the added value of guarding the mortal remains of our father St. John of the Cross. remains of our father San Juan de la Cruz, in the church of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers. Interesting visit just this year of 2026, in which we celebrate the First Centenary of the Proclamation of St. John of the Cross as Doctor of the Church.
Medina del Campo and Fontiveros
Valladolid, which houses what was the second foundation of the Discalced Carmel in 1567. In this monastery of Discalced Carmelite Mothers, St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross met, and the latter was conquered by Mother Teresa, for the foundation of the first monastery of Discalced Carmelite friars.
It also has the particularity of being the town where San Juan de la Cruz spent most of his childhood, and where he entered the Order of Carmen.
The church of the Barefoot Carmelite Fathers, the Castillo de la Mota, the Plaza Mayor, other reasons to visit this town, where the first bill of exchange was drawn in 1553.
Salamanca and Duruelo
In the convent of San Esteban, of the Dominican Fathers, is preserved the confessional that St. Teresa of Jesus used when she was in the city. In Salamanca was made the VII Teresian Foundation, in 1570.
The beautiful Plaza Mayor, the two Cathedrals, the University with its spectacular facade, the whole monumental center are more than convincing reasons to make a visit.
On the way to Salamanca, or on the way back, we will visit the "little place" of DURUELO, as Mother Teresa would say, where the first convent of Discalced Carmelite Fathers was founded on November 28, 1568, having as one of the first conventuals, San Juan de la Cruz. Nowadays there is a small chapel that remembers the place, and a monastery of Discalced Carmelite Mothers.Salamanca, Castilian capital, of unquestionable beauty and history, in each one of its stones, streets and squares. In its famous university, San Juan de la Cruz studied, being a student of Fray Luis de León.

O God,
in your infinite mercy,
you have called us to follow you
in the family of the Teresian Carmel,
in gift of Jesus Christ,
through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
St. Joseph
and all the Carmelite saints,
we ask
that the World Meeting of the OCDS 2026 in Avila
may reaffirm our vocation
and help us to grow
in love and service
to our brothers and sisters.
Grant us the grace
to be ever more witnesses
of your forgiveness, mercy and love
in Carmel, in the Church and in the world.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
